The Problem - Sand Erosion of Composite Structures
Composite materials are often the preferred material for weight-sensitive applications. However, composites are vulnerable to rapid degradation from the erosive forces of wind, sand and rain, which can lead to catastrophic failure of mission-critical components. This vulnerability leads to decreased service life and increased inspection and repair costs for the entire system.
The Solution - Nano-Enhanced Co-Cured Film
NanoSperse, in conjunction with the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI), has developed a nano-enhanced Sand Erosion Protection Film that provides improved erosion protection for composite materials. NanoSperse’s material concentrates wear-resistant nanomaterials at the surface of the composite part. The film is co-cured in the original composite structure, or can be applied later as a repair material. The film has been qualified for a military engine part. The cost of NanoSperse’s Sand Erosion Protection Film is comparable to paint, but it eliminates the VOCs and baking cycles associated with paint – and it provides a 5-fold improvement in sand erosion resistance.
